I experienced a concerning incident involving candle safety recently. After lighting a candle and positioning it on my bedroom window sill, I made the mistake of opening the window slightly, assuming it would be safe. Typically, I am diligent about placing candles in draft-free areas. However, shortly afterward, I noticed the candle jar had turned black inside and my bedroom was filled with smoke. Recognising the potential danger I took immediate action. This serves as a crucial reminder to always adhere to proper safety guidelines when handling candles.

Understanding the Risk of Drafts:

Drafts, whether from an open window, vent, or even a ceiling fan can significantly impact the behavior of a burning candle. When a candle is placed in a drafty area, the flame becomes vulnerable to erratic movements, flickers & even flare ups.

Candle Safety Tips:

Choose the Right Placement: Always place candles on a stable heat resistant surface away from flammable materials. Always avoid placing near windows, doorways, vents or fans.

Trim the Wick: Before lighting a candle, trim to about 1/4 inch to prevent excessive flickering and erratic burning.

Supervise at all Times: Never leave a burning candle unattended, especially in drafty areas. It only takes a moment for a flickering flame to ignite nearby objects. 

Use Alternatives: If drafty conditions persist, consider safer alternatives such as flameless LED candles or wax warmers to achieve a similar ambiance without the risk of an open flame.
